I believe this means troubles or duties. I think it is a negative word expressing troublesome duties.

    I've heard calamity used to describe a tragic incident or something devastating thats happened.On Dictionary. com it says a calamity is a great misfortune or disaster.

    i think of calamity jane, which makes me think of disaster
